The Sentence I Hear After Almost Every Banquet (and Comedy Night)

Over the years, I have had the incredible privilege of speaking at fundraising banquets all across the country. I never take that opportunity lightly because I know I am stepping into something God has already been doing long before I arrive.

Every ministry has a story. Every organization has people who have prayed, sacrificed, served, and believed in a mission that is bigger than themselves. When I walk into a banquet room, I am reminded that this is never just another event. These are real people, real lives, and a real calling from God.

The sentence I hear after almost every banquet is one that humbles me every single time.

"Tim, you handled such a difficult and delicate issue with amazing words."

Then they usually continue.

"You brought the serious and the funny together perfectly. You helped us laugh, but you also helped us feel the weight and importance of the mission. We cried, we laughed, we were inspired, and we were reminded why we do what we do."

Those words mean more to me than people realize because I understand the responsibility that comes with standing on that stage. Many of the ministries I serve are dealing with incredibly important and sensitive issues. They are serving people who are hurting, walking through difficult circumstances, and desperately needing hope.

The last thing I ever want to do is make light of something that deserves compassion, truth, and grace. But I also believe laughter is a gift from God. I believe humor can open hearts, break down walls, and create moments where people are ready to hear something deeper.

One of my favorite parts of a banquet is seeing how God uses the entire evening. The stories, testimonies, videos, mission moments, and generosity all work together to remind people why they are there.

When I step onto that stage, my goal is not simply to tell jokes. My goal is to serve the ministry, honor their mission, and help tell the story God has entrusted to them.

Many times, people tell me they appreciate how I was able to blend their own stories, their ministry details, and the things we discussed before the event into my presentation. I love doing that because every organization is unique, and every ministry has something special that God is doing through them.

That doesn't happen because I am clever. It happens because I believe the details matter. People give when they feel connected to a mission, and one of the greatest privileges I have is helping people feel even more connected to the work God has called that ministry to do.

The moments I cherish most are when a room full of people experiences the full range of emotions God created us to experience. We laugh at a ridiculous story. We smile because we see ourselves in the humor. We are challenged by Scripture, moved by stories of changed lives, and sometimes we wipe away a few tears.

That combination of laughter, inspiration, generosity, God's grace, and calling is something I never want to take for granted.

I know my ability to communicate, tell stories, and connect with audiences is a gift from God. It is something He has allowed me to develop, and I pray every time I step on stage that He will use it for His purposes.

Every time I walk away from a banquet, I leave thankful. Thankful that a ministry trusted me with their story. Thankful that God allowed me to be part of something bigger than myself. Thankful that laughter and tears can exist in the same room when God is at work.

And most of all, I am thankful that through one evening together, God can remind people that their generosity matters, their service matters, and the lives they are impacting matter.

That is why I love what I do.
